Statistics reveal that textile sector accounts for almost 17 percent of the entire exports and providing employment to over 30 million workers in the country. Surveys prove that while the industry will be worth more than US $80 billion and 60 percent of exports by 2010.

Union Textile Minister Shankersinh Vaghela speaking candidly to Fibre2fashion shed light on various government policies implemented and future schemes.

F2F: Are there any special policies suggested to make Indian textile industry globally competitive?

Vaghela: After the conclusion of quota regime in 2005, it was necessary to arrange talks with the office bearers and acquire knowledge about the export provisions. Meanwhie, whatever export growth has been made is the result of successful implementation of several government policies.

F2F: Several apparel and garment Special Economic Zones (SEZ) have been announced but most of them have not been effectively implemented. What corrective measures have been taken in this direction?

Vaghela: As for the SEZs, Government had a different policy 'Textile Centres Infrastructure Development Scheme (TCIDS)' Apparel Park with the initial investment of Rs20 crore and later disbursement of Rs17 crores. This scheme was implemented only in Tirupur. The new plan 'Integrated Textile Park' has been developed offering a subsidy of Rs40 crore. This policy has been thriving and 26 projects have already been cleared. Government is willing to approve future proposals in this regard. However, the success of these projects also depends on the changing policies of different States.
