The 14th ETN Conference, including the General Assembly, will take place in 2007, from 14 to 17 September, in London.
After Moscow and Tokyo, London is the third most expensive city in the world. Due to this fact, it has proven difficult for us to organise the 14th ETN Conference 2007 in such a way that is still affordable to our members.
The Constance Howard Resource and Research Centre in Textiles at Goldsmiths College was prepared to host the event, but after 10 months of waiting they were still unable to provide us with a precise estimate of costs for use of their premises. Thus, the ETN Secretariat was obliged to look for another venue that would offer better information.
Eventually, we found that the Department of Art, Media and Design of the London Metropolitan University (LMU) was prepared to relaunch the Conference project together with us. Paula Ashbrooke and Pat Moloney, both lecturers at this department, took part in our Izmir Conference, and they had already scheduled demonstrations and short workshops for the pre-programme of our forthcoming London Conference.
We even planned to have the Conference opening at their premises in conjunction with an exhibition due to be held there. When the Dean, professor Brian Falconbridge, heard about our problems he immediately made efforts to find a solution. However, it is not easy for a London university to relate to our Network's modest budget, or to those of the many members from countries with difficult foreign exchange rates.
Thus we need to prepare for the highest conference and accommodation costs we have ever seen, but still we are very grateful to have been offered an interesting event in one of the most fascinating cities for textile people in the world.
