Needles+Pins: Textiles and Tools is the exhibition currently on view at the Museum of International Folk Art. The exhibition covers the tools of the trade and the textile products spanning both centuries of textiles and tools.

The textiles come from the museum's collection which numbers more than 20,000 textiles - many being seen here for the first time.

The exhibition has sparked the creation of an ambitious and informative series of textile demonstrations that will take place at the museum with the Espanola Valley Fiber Arts Center and the Enchanted Lace Makers from Albuquerque.

These artists will demonstrate the process and technique of weaving, spinning, knitting, embroidery, crochet, and lace-making. Demonstrations begin in mid-July and run through April 2008. See below for the full schedule.

Needles+Pins is also the inspiration for a giant installation that will measure more than forty feet in length and will be choreographed by textile artist Tracy Krumm. Called Big Fiber/Human Tools, it will take place between July 20 and August 10, 2007 on Milner Plaza just outside the museum.

The public is invited to assist in the creation of this gigantic textile piece using their bodies as tools to weave industrial grade fibers into the installation. Call the museum at 505-476-1200 for hours and days to participate in this project.

The Fiber Arts Trail provides for a more in-depth view of the diversity of the textile arts innorthern New Mexico. The Trail was developed by New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs. The work of more than 200 artisans is available for viewing and purchase at seventy-one sites in communities throughout northern New Mexico.

While not from New Mexico don't forget the Gee's Bend and Beyond quilt exhibition opening on November 16, 2007.
