Four of the nation's top high school fashion designers are headed to Cornell University this week to witness the Ivy League's largest student-run fashion show, including a first-place finisher who will see her creation walk the runway at the April 16 event.
The 2011 Cornell Design Award for High School Students issued a nationwide call for students to design an outfit themed for “a reception on the moon.” More than 250 flights of fashion fancy were then judged by faculty members and designers in the apparel industry who are alumni from Cornell's Fiber Science and Apparel Design department. Three top-places awarded along with a number of gold and silver honorable mentions.
In addition to earning national recognition, the first-place design is being created and will be modeled before thousands of attendees during the 27th annual Cornell Fashion Collective show on Saturday, April 16 in Cornell's Barton Hall. All four top student finishers – first place, second place and two students who tied for third – will be attending this year's show.
This year's top Cornell Design Award for High School Students finishers are:
First Place: Tiffany Zhang from Piedmont, Calif. Zhang is a junior at Piedmont High School. In her design entry form, Zhang called herself a would-be game designer also considering a career in fashion.
Second Place: Jessica Madlinger, from the Maspeth neighborhood of Queens in New York City. Madlinger is a senior at the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan.
Third Place (tie): Natahlia Hall-Bourdeau, from the Bronx in New York City. Natahlia also is a senior at the High School of Art and Design.
Third Place (tie): Lateef Freeman, from Albany, N.Y. Lateef is a junior at Albany High School.
