The MFA Forum, a multi-stakeholder initiative, aims to promote social responsibility and competitiveness in national garment industries that are vulnerable in the new post-MFA (Multi-Fiber Arrangement) trading environment. The MFA Forum's work is grounded in the principles of the Collaborative Framework that outlines roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders in the garment industry, including government, brands and retailers, industry, civil society, trade unions.
Several issues concerning the garment and textiles industry in Bangladesh have come to light since the end of the MFA, including abnormally low wages, non-compliance with labor standards, restructuring of the industry causing some job loss manufacturers closing factories and shifting investments abroad, and poor infrastructure.
The MFA Forum will present the work currently taking place in Bangladesh to address its increased vulnerability after the MFA to promote Bangladesh's responsible competitiveness in the garment and textile industry.
