A day-long Charity Bazaar organized in Brussels on June 4 by Asia Pacific Women's Association (APWA) enchanted visitors belonging to all sects of life. It was inaugurated by Jalil Abbas Jilani, Ambassador of Pakistan to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union.
Shaista Jalil, the Ambassador's wife, who is the President of APWA, organized the event for fund raising. The underlying object behind organizing the event was to familiarise the Asia Pacific countries with each other's diversified customs, traditions and cultures and to present the same to the people in Belgium and providing them with a chance to enjoy the diversified cultural affluences of various countries through a display of their handicrafts.
The event attracted participation of Embassies in Brussels from 29 nations of the Asia Pacific region. Pakistan Embassy in Brussels also set up a booth at the bazaar displaying Pakistani handicrafts, artefacts and decoration items which well reflected the country's cultural legacy.
Of all the items displayed, Pakistani handicraft items greatly drew attention of the visitors and generated good revenue.
At the inaugural ceremony of the event, a Parade of Nations was held wherein, young girls and boys sporting traditional outfits walked on to the stage waving small flags of their nations. The effort was lauded by all present there.
The income generated from this Charity Bazaar is intended to be given to three charity organizations. These are South Pacific's Tuvalu-based Fusi Alofa Disability Association, an association that helps disabled people; an orphanage in Indonesia; and L'Eglantier, a Belgian shelter for women and children in need.
