South India Cotton Association (SIMA) reported that while the demand for rotors climbed, spindles on the other side recorded sharp drop.

Number of rotors surged from 474,000 during 2000-2001 to 519,000 in 2005-2006, statistics indicate.

However, the spindles were down from 39.44 million to 37.53 million, during the same periods.

Compared to 2004-2005, there was a decline of 597,000 spindles and an increase of 7,344 rotors in 2005-2006.

Production of cotton yarn accounts for almost eight percent of the total value of yarn exports.

Currently, there are 2743 stand alone spinning mills (both SSI and Non-SSI) in India, with an installed capacity of 30.90 million spindles and 463,000 rotors.

Of the total installed capacity of 37.53 million spindles, spinning mills constituted 82.32 percent of spindles and the remaining 17.67 percent are with composite mills.

In the stand-alone spinning sector, organized sector consists of 89.08 percent and SSI makes up for the remaining 10.92 percent.
