  • SDS KnitPaint-Online enables global knit programming.
  • Yarn Bank and Data Mall give access to 3,500+ materials with fibre, certification, and sustainability details.
  • By merging craftsmanship and technology, the company drives efficiency and innovation.
At ITMA Asia + CITME 2025 in Singapore (October 28-31), Japan’s Shima Seiki will unveil the production version of its SES-R computerised knitting machine, featuring advanced 3D shaping with a new sinker system and versatile patterning for sectors such as sports, interiors and apparel.

Alongside it, the upgraded SWG-XR Wholegarment machine—successor to the SWG-X—will demonstrate higher productivity and expanded patterning capabilities, while the new SDS KnitPaint-Online software offers global knit programming solutions.

Since its founding in 1962, Shima Seiki has led the knitting industry with over 2,900 patents, pioneering whole garment technology and digital textile innovations that help brands, designers, and manufacturers create sustainable, efficient, and high-quality products.

Digital solutions

At the core of Shima Seiki’s innovation is its whole garment knitting technology which allows seamless, fully fashioned garments to be produced in one piece without sewing.

Building on this foundation, its APEXFiz software offers designers the ability to create detailed 3D virtual prototypes for knitwear, socks, woven fabrics, and more.

By simulating fabrics, exploring colourways and refining stitch patterns before production, APEXFiz eliminates the need for costly physical samples, accelerating development while cutting down on waste.

Material innovation

Shima Seiki’s commitment to innovation goes beyond design, offering essential tools for material sourcing and product planning through its Shima Online Services.

The Yarn Bank platform provides access to over 3,500 materials from more than 65 global suppliers, featuring detailed information on fibre composition, certifications, sustainability, recyclability, price, and machine compatibility—helping designers quickly find suitable options.

A key feature of Yarn Bank is the ability to view yarns knitted on Shima Seiki’s machines, complete with sample photos, techniques, and specifications. Users can search by machine type, explore multiple samples, and contact manufacturers directly for pricing and orders. Many brands now source yarns through the platform to expand their materials and collaborations.

Complementing this, Shima Data Mall offers downloadable yarn data for use with APEXFiz and SDS-ONE APEX design systems, enabling realistic simulations of complex yarns like twisted, looped, or glitter blends—tasks that once required extensive sampling. This function supports accurate knit pattern simulations and helps streamline planning.

As rising material costs, supply chain challenges and sustainability demands reshape the industry, these platforms have become indispensable.

Designers worldwide—including those from top fashion houses—rely on them to discover new materials, reduce development time, and adopt sustainable practices while fostering innovation.

Fibre development

In collaboration with The Woolmark Company, Shima Seiki is championing the benefits of natural fibres like Merino wool, which excels in thermoregulation, moisture management and odour resistance.

By combining these performance traits with its digital solutions, Shima Seiki helps manufacturers create products that meet modern fashion demands while enhancing comfort and sustainability.

This approach reflects the company’s broader philosophy—blending traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology to redefine how fibres and fabrics are used in contemporary fashion.

Global impact

Shima Seiki’s collaborations with respected suppliers—including Japan’s Miyama, Italy’s New Mill Spa and China’s Jiangsu Lugang—demonstrate a commitment to nurturing craftsmanship and advancing textile innovation.

Through its platforms and partnerships, Shima Seiki supports a network of designers and manufacturers who are reshaping the fashion landscape with smarter, more responsible, and higher-quality solutions.

With a steadfast focus on sustainability, technological advancement, and collaborative innovation, Shima Seiki continues to empower the global textile industry. By integrating digital tools, material expertise and traditional techniques, it is helping brands navigate new challenges while reducing waste, improving efficiency, and meeting evolving consumer expectations.
