The UN General Assembly (UNGA) recently adopted a resolution granting, on an exceptional basis, an extended preparatory period of five years to enable Cambodia and Senegal to prepare for graduation from the least developed country (LDC) status on December 19, 2029, and ensure a smooth transition out of the category. The standard period is three years.

The UN Committee for Development Policy (CDP) took the decision earlier this year during an evaluation process. Cambodia was expected to graduate from LDC status in 2027.

The General Assembly invited both countries to prepare their transition strategy with the support of the UN system and in cooperation with their bilateral, regional and multilateral development and trading partners.

Criteria for graduation assessment include per capita income, the human assets index and the economic and environmental vulnerability index.

After graduation, Cambodia will lose some of the trade benefits offered by the United States and the European Union, including duty-free status under the Generalised System of Preferences.
