  • China's cotton output rose to 6.641 million tonnes in 2025, up 7.7 per cent YoY, driven by a 5 per cent expansion in planting area and a 2.6 per cent increase in average yield to 2,229 kg per hectare.
  • Xinjiang led growth with an 8.4 per cent rise to 6.165 million tonnes.
  • Meanwhile, production declined marginally in the Yangtze and Yellow River basins, highlighting regional disparities.
China’s cotton production climbed to 6.641 million tonnes in 2025, marking a 7.7 per cent increase year on year (YoY), according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

China’s total cotton planting area grew 5 per cent compared with 2024, while average yield increased 2.6 per cent YoY to 2,229 kilograms per hectare.

The rise was supported by both an expansion in planting area and improved yield efficiency nationwide, said Chinese media reports.

Productivity gains in Xinjiang remained the key driver of national output growth. The region recorded an 8.4 per cent rise in cotton production, reaching 6.165 million tonnes, reinforcing its dominant position in China’s cotton sector.

In contrast, production in the Yangtze River basin slipped 0.7 per cent, while output in the Yellow River basin declined 1.5 per cent, reflecting continued regional disparities in cotton cultivation.
