China’s national railways carried about 2.68 billion tonnes of cargo in the first eight months of 2025, marking a 3.5 per cent year-over-year (YoY) increase, according to the China State Railway Group Co, Ltd (CSRG). On average, 184,000 freight cars were loaded daily, up 4.3 per cent YoY.

The coal shipments totalled 1.38 billion tonnes during the January-August period, ensuring stable power supply during peak demand. Rail-water container shipments surged 17.5 per cent to 11.48 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), highlighting growing demand for efficient logistics solutions.

The country also strengthened cross-border freight services, with China-Europe Railway Express and China-Central Asia trains maintaining smooth and stable operations, underlining the sector’s role in supporting trade connectivity and economic resilience, said Chinese media reports quoting CSRG.
