  • DHL Group has announced that it will suspend postal shipments of goods from Germany to the US from August 29, 2025, due to new US customs rules ending duty-free de minimis treatment.
  • It stopped accepting business parcels from August 22.
  • Only genuine private gifts under $100 remain exempt.
  • DHL Express shipments continue under commercial clearance, with duties of around 15 per cent on EU goods.
DHL Group has announced temporary restrictions on postal shipments from Germany to the United States effective August 29, 2025. The move follows the US executive order, ‘Suspending Duty-Free De Minimis Treatment for all Countries,’ which eliminates the current duty-free threshold for low-value imports.

The Deutsche Post and DHL Parcel Germany have stopped accepting parcels and postal items containing goods from business customers destined for the US from August 22, DHL said in a press release.

DHL explained that the new US customs processes, which differ significantly from existing regulations, make continued service temporarily unfeasible. Key issues remain unresolved, including how customs duties will be collected, what additional data must be submitted, and how it will be transmitted to US Customs and Border Protection.

Private gift shipments valued up to $100 remain exempt but will face stricter controls to prevent misuse. Document shipments in letters are also unaffected. However, packages from private customers exceeding $100 and all commercial shipments will fall under the new duty structure. Goods shipped via DHL Express and through commercial customs clearance remain possible, with duties expected to be 15 per cent for European Union goods, though some product categories may face higher rates.

The suspension affected postal operators globally. PostEurop, the Association of European Postal Services, has confirmed that member companies will also introduce restrictions or suspensions in line with national authorities.

Currently, EU goods valued up to $800 can enter the US duty-free. From August 29, all imports—except genuine private gifts under $100—will be subject to duties.

DHL is closely monitoring further developments and is in contact with US authorities and its European partners. The company's goal is to resume postal goods shipping to the US as quickly as possible, added the release.
