  • South Indian cotton yarn markets are expected to strengthen next week as trading resumes after the Pongal holidays. Prices firmed in Mumbai on expectations of improved domestic garment demand ahead of summer, though Tiruppur remained subdued due to the shutdown. Higher cotton prices, reduced mill discounts and improving fabric demand are likely to support an upward trend in yarn prices.

In the Mumbai market, cotton yarn prices increased further by &#****;** per kg. Although spinning mills raised rates by &#****;** per kg, the market was unable to absorb the full hike. A trader from the Mumbai market told Fibre*Fashion, “The cotton yarn market will be driven by domestic demand ahead of the summer season. Mills are trying to increase their selling prices in line with higher natural fibre costs, but demand from downstream industries has not been very strong. Now, the fabric market is also witnessing a revival in demand from the garment industry. Fabric and garment manufacturers will have to plan their production in view of the approaching summer season.”

In Mumbai, ** carded yarn of warp and weft varieties were traded at &#****;*,***-*,*** (~$**.**-**.**) and &#****;*,***-*,*** per * kg (~$**.**-**.**) (excluding GST), respectively. Other prices include ** combed warp at &#****;***-*** (~$*.**-*.**) per kg, ** carded weft at &#****;*,***-*,*** (~$**.**-**.**) per *.* kg, **/** carded warp at &#****;***-*** (~$*.**-*.**) per kg, **/** carded warp at &#****;***-*** (~$*.**-*.**) per kg and **/** combed warp at &#****;***-*** (~$*.**-*.**) per kg, according to trade sources.
