The Dutch economic climate this January was negative, according to the Statistics Netherlands (CBS), which reports that eight out of the 13 indicators in its business cycle tracer were performing above their long-term trend in the month. Consumers were slightly less gloomy than they were in December. However, consumer confidence was still exceptionally low.

It was well below the long-term average over the past two decades.

Producer confidence also improved slightly in January and is above its long-term average, CBS said in a release.

The business cycle tracer is a tool to monitor the state and the cycle of the Dutch economy.

In November last year, the total volume (adjusted for working days) of goods exports was up by 4.8 per cent year on year and the average daily output of the country’s manufacturing industry was 0.2 per cent lower than in November 2021.

The number of companies declared bankrupt (including sole proprietorships), adjusted for court session days, increased for the fourth consecutive month in December. There were 34 more bankruptcies in December than in November last year.
