Employment rate of people aged 20-64 in EU 75.3% in Q1 2023

The employment rate of people aged 20-64 in the European Union (EU) stood at 75.3 per cent in the first quarter this year (Q1)—an increase of 0.5 percentage points (pp) compared with the fourth quarter last year, according to Eurostat.

The highest increases were recorded in Bulgaria (2.8 pp), Croatia (2 pp) and Cyprus (1.1 pp).

While employment rose in 19 EU countries, it remained stable in Latvia and Finland and decreased in 5 EU countries, with the biggest decreases recorded in Slovenia (minus 1.6 pp), Lithuania (minus 1 pp) and Malta (minus 0.3 pp).

Between Q4 2022 and Q1 2023, 3.2 million unemployed people in the EU, i.e., 24.3 per cent of all unemployed Q4 2022, found a job. During this period, 6.8 million (51.1 per cent) remained unemployed and 3.3 million unemployed people (24.6 per cent) transitioned out of the labour force.

Of all those in employment in Q4 2022, 2.5 million (1.2 per cent) became unemployed in Q1 2023, and 5.0 million (2.4 per cent) transitioned out of the labour force.

From those counted as out of the labour force in Q4 2022, 5 million (4.3 per cent) moved into employment in Q1 2023 and 3.9 million (3.3 per cent) transitioned into unemployment.
