Seasonally-adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) remained stable in the euro area and increased by 0.1 per cent quarter on quarter (QoQ) in the European Union (EU) in the fourth quarter (Q4) last year, according to a preliminary flash estimate published by Eurostat, the EU statistical office.

The same increased by 0.9 per cent year on year (YoY) in the euro area and by 1.1 per cent YoY in the EU in Q4 2024, after a 0.9-per cent rise in the euro area and a 1-per cent rise in the EU in the preceding quarter.

In Q3 2024, GDP had grown by 0.4 per cent QoQ in both areas, a Eurostat release said.

According to a first estimation of annual growth for 2024, based on seasonally- and calendar-adjusted quarterly data, GDP increased by 0.7 per cent in the euro area and by 0.8 per cent in the EU.

In Q4 2024, Portugal (plus 1.5 per cent) recorded the highest QoQ increase, followed by Lithuania (plus 0.9 per cent) and Spain (plus 0.8 per cent). Declines were recorded in Ireland (minus 1.3 per cent), Germany (minus 0.2 per cent) and France (minus 0.1 per cent).

The YoY growth rates were positive for nine countries and negative for three.
