GDP up by 2.2%, employment up by 0.9% in euro area in Q3 2021

In the third quarter (Q3) of 2021, seasonally-adjusted gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 2.2 per cent in the euro area and by 2.1 per cent in the European Union (EU) compared with the previous quarter, according to an estimate published by Eurostat, the EU statistical office. In Q2 as well, the figures were the same for both the entities.

Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, seasonally adjusted GDP increased by 3.9 per cent in the euro area and by 4.1 per cent in the EU in Q3 2021, and GDP in the United States increased by 0.5 per cent compared with Q2, when it rose by 1.6 per cent.

GDP growth by Austria (+3.8 per cent) recorded the highest increase of GDP compared to the previous quarter, followed by France (+3 per cent) and Portugal (+2.9 per cent). Lowest growth rates were observed in Romania and Slovakia (+0.4 per cent), while GDP remained stable in Lithuania, an EU press release said.

The number of employed persons increased by 0.9 per cent in both the euro area and in the EU in Q3 2021, compared with Q2, when employment had increased by 0.8 per cent in both zones.
