  • Trade sentiment worsened, with retailers discouraged by a weak start to the Christmas season.
  • Manufacturing outlook fell sharply amid thinner order books, despite slightly better current conditions.
  • Firms overall remain doubtful about any near-term recovery.
Germany’s business sentiment weakened in November as the ifo Business Climate Index fell to 88.1 points from 88.4 in October, driven by increasingly pessimistic expectations. On the other hand, companies assessed their current situation as somewhat more positive. They have little faith that a recovery is coming anytime soon.

The trade sector recorded a clear deterioration, with firms viewing their current situation as somewhat worse and expectations declining further. Retailers were particularly disappointed with the start of the Christmas season, Clemens Fuest, president of the ifo institute, noted in a press release.

There was a noticeable setback in the transport and logistics sector as well.

Manufacturing also weakened, with expectations taking a significant hit as companies grew more sceptical about the coming months and reported lower order books, even though current business conditions improved slightly.
