  • India and Canada have held their sixth Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment in Ottawa, aiming to strengthen their bilateral trade relationship, promote B2B engagements, and review the CEPA negotiations.
  • Furthermore, Indian minister Piyush Goyal is also visiting Toronto to boost trade and investment relations with key Canadian companies.
India’s Union minister of commerce, industry, and textiles, Piyush Goyal, and Canadian minister of international trade, Mary Ng, have co-chaired the sixth India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment (MDTI) in Ottawa. The bilateral mechanism aimed to discuss a broad spectrum of trade and investment-related issues and cooperation areas, including strengthening the bilateral trade relationship between India and Canada, investment promotion and cooperation, and promoting B2B engagements.

The ministers also reviewed the India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations.

At the last MDTI meeting in March 2022, both ministers launched the CEPA negotiations with a possibility to have an interim agreement or Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA). Since then, seven rounds of negotiations have been held, Indian ministry of commerce and industry said in a press release.

Today, Goyal is visiting Toronto to promote trade and investment, where he is scheduled to have various engagements. These engagements include meetings with CEOs of key Canadian companies, a round table of Indian and Canadian CEOs, etc. The visit is expected to impart further momentum to bilateral trade and investment relations.

“Delighted to meet Canadian minister for international trade, Mary Ng, in Ottawa. Looking forward to continuing discussions to further strengthen bilateral ties at the India-Canada Ministerial Dialogue on Trade and Investment today,” Goyal said in a twitter post.
