The Indian textiles ministry has diluted the maximum permissible production limit for high density polyethylene and polypropylene (HDPE/PP) bags to tackle the crisis of packaging foodgrains due to closure of jute mills during the ongoing COVID-19-related lockdown and to protect the produce of wheat farmers by providing them alternate packaging bags.

It raised the number to 1.80 lakh bales on March 26 and added another 0.82 lakh bales on April 6, taking the total number to 2.62 lakh bales, according to an official release.

As soon as the production of jute bags in jute mills resumes after the lockdown period is over, priority will be given to jute bags for packaging of food grains, the government said.

To help jute farmers during the lockdown, the ministry has written to the all jute-growing states to allow movement, sale and supply of the jute seeds, fertilizers and other farming aids.

As the Rabi crop is about to be harvested, huge quantities of packaging bags are required.
