India recently expressed hope regarding finalisation of a free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU) soon.

During the recent visit to India of the College of Commissioners, led by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, she and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had decided to direct their teams to finalise the FTA within this year, said Tanmaya Lal, secretary, West, in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The negotiations are under way and both sides are taking forward the process in a very strong manner, Lal was cited as saying by local media reports.

The India visit of the EU delegation followed US President Donald Trump threatening the bloc with 25 per cent tariffs.
