Textile and clothing exports from India fell 5.84 per cent to $33.8 billion in fiscal 2019-20 ending March 31, 2020, compared to exports of $35.9 billion in the previous fiscal, according to data. Industry was hopeful of closing the financial year at same level as in 2018-19, but a sharp 32.2 per cent year-on-year decline in March exports turned the table.

Category-wise, clothing exports dropped 4.34 per cent to $15.4 billion during April 2019 to March 2020, compared to exports of $16.1 billion during the same period of the previous fiscal. In March alone, exports plummeted 35 per cent year-on-year, the data showed.

Textile (excluding clothing) exports dipped around 7 per cent to $18.4 billion in 2019-20, as against exports of $19.8 billion during 2018-19.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and lockdowns, April exports are likely to be worse than March.
