  • India's wholesale price index (WPI) inflation eased to 0.39 per cent in May 2025 from 0.85 per cent in April, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • The marginal month-on-month decline of 0.06 per cent was driven by lower fuel and primary article prices.
  • However, inflation remained positive due to rising prices in food products, chemicals, electricity, and textiles, including apparel.
The annual rate of inflation based on all India wholesale price index (WPI) number is 0.39 per cent (provisional) for the month of May 2025 (over May 2024), compared to 0.85 per cent registered in the previous month, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The month over month change in WPI for the month of May 2025 stood at -0.06 per cent as compared to April 2025.

“Positive rate of inflation in May 2025 is primarily due to increase in prices of manufacture of food products, electricity, other manufacturing, chemicals and chemical products, manufacture of other transport equipment and non-food articles etc,” the Office of the Economic Adviser, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said.

The official WPI for all commodities (Base: 2011-12 = 100) for May decreased slightly to 154.1 from 154.2 in the previous month.

The index for manufactured products (weight 64.23 per cent) remained unchanged at 144.9 in May 2025. The index for ‘Manufacture of Textiles’ sub-group increased slightly to 136.6 in May from 136.4 in April, while the index for ‘Manufacture of Wearing Apparel’ rose to 155 from 154.1 last month.

The index for primary articles (weight 22.62 per cent) decreased by 0.05 per cent to 184.3 in May from 184.4 in April, while that for fuel and power (weight 13.15 per cent) declined by 0.95 per cent to 146.7 in May from 148.1 in April.
