India recently sought consultations with Indonesia under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules on the extension of safeguard measures by the latter on cotton yarn, the world trade body said.

A May 24 notification by Indonesia was circulated among member nations by the WTO committee on safeguards. The notification was about the finding of serious injury or threat to Indonesian companies producing cotton yarn. Another notification by Indonesia discussed proposed safeguard measures against the imports of the product.

India has sought virtual consultations with Indonesia on 10-13 June or on a mutually convenient date and time to review the information and exchange views on the extension of the measure.

These consultations, however, do not fall under the WTO's dispute settlement mechanism.
