Indian government has decided to extend export benefits under the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) scheme to companies operating in special economic zones (SEZs) and export-oriented units (EOUs). The Director-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) may issue a formal notification soon, amending the foreign trade policy accordingly. SEZs and EOUs were initially excluded from the scheme when it was launched in August 2021.

The ministry of commerce communicated its decision to DGFT on Friday. The industry had been demanding the inclusion of SEZs and EOUs in the scheme.

After the rollout of ICEGATE (Indian Customs Electronic Data Interchange Gateway) in SEZs, the RoDTEP scheme may also be extended to them, according to a memorandum from the commerce ministry.

In August 2021, the government announced tax refund rates for 8,555 products, including yarn. Various central and state duties, taxes, and levies on input products are refunded under the scheme, with rates ranging from 0.3 per cent to 4.3 per cent. RoDTEP refunds taxes and duties not covered by other schemes, in line with WTO provisions for compensating duties, taxes, and levies on exported products.
