Inflation in Bangladesh rose to 9.89 per cent in May from 9.74 per cent in April, the highest in the past seven months, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

Curbing inflation would be the government’s top priority, state minister for finance Waseqa Ayesha Khan said a few days ago. The country’s national budget for fiscal 2024-25 will be presented soon.

The country has been facing inflation above 9 per cent for 11 months in this fiscal. In October last year, inflation was 9.93 per cent.

Earlier on January 17, Bangladesh in its monetary policy statement revised up its inflation target from 6 per cent to 7.5 per cent in response to prices persistently staying high.

Non-food inflation slipped by 15 basis points to 9.19 per cent in May from 9.34 per cent in April.
