The sixth edition of Isko I-Skool has been announced at Premium Berlin, as part of a detailed presentation hosted by Isko. Focusing on the Denim Design Award, Isko will be advancing the educational programme that has become an industry must-have since its launch back in 2013. Isko is the world’s leading ingredient brand in quality denim manufacturing.
The contest will, for the first time, involve not only students in their final year of a Fashion Design BA or MA, but also denim design professionals in the early stages of their careers (those who have graduated between 2014 and 2017 and are maximum 27 years old), Isko said in a press release. The sixth edition of Isko I-Skool has been announced at Premium Berlin, as part of a detailed presentation hosted by Isko. As for schools, the project is raising the bar by involving only the most authoritative fashion beacons worldwide. The participating fashion firms include NABA – Nuova Accademia delle Belle Arti (Milan, Italy); Bunka Fashion College (Tokyo, Japan); Polimoda (Florence, Italy); BIFT – Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology (Beijing, China); Aalto University – School of Arts, Design and Architecture (Helsinki, Finland); Tsinghua University – Academy of Arts & Design (Beijing, China); AMFI – Amsterdam Fashion Institute (Amsterdam, The Netherlands); SCAD – The University for Creative Careers (Savannah and Atlanta, USA); FIDM – Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (Los Angeles, USA); Istituto Marangoni – School of Fashion, Art & Design (Paris, France; Milan and Florence, Italy; London, UK), and AMD – Akademie Mode & Design (Berlin and Düsseldorf, Germany).
Designers are now asked to go beyond the creation of a single outfit: they will have to develop a Capsule Collection made up of six garments. Selecting some of the most advanced Isko denim fabrics and patented technologies, they will create four industry-driven denim garments (designed to be developed industrially) and two denim show pieces (custom and handmade items expressing the designer’s pure creativity).
This year, the creative theme of Isko I-Skool starts from one important belief: designing and developing the right fit, for any type of form and body, is the key to win. Designers’ creativity will then be confronted with the conception of the body. Designers will be asked to start from a focused body inspiration research, a market and target consumer analysis, to develop their own version of the new denim codes.
This year the programme has focused on developing a denim educational guide, an essential tool for a better understanding of the industry. This is a unique opportunity for the students, as not many schools include special modules dedicated specifically to denim in their course programme. The document will focus on five main areas, which are: history of denim, field to fabric, fabric to garment, finishing and wet/dry processes, and denim glossary.
Isko I-Skool is a collective, value chain project which has exceeded expectations year after year, creating a unique positive framework involving schools, partners and key mentors. At the core of the programme is the authoritative network of leading players who make their competence and expertise available to nurture young denim talents. The project is continuously growing and it is always open to involve new business partners sharing the same approach towards tomorrow’s game changers. (GK)
