Japan's clothing imports up 7.3% in 2018-19

Japan’s imports of clothing and accessories increased by 7.3 per cent year-on-year to 3,325.489 billion yen ($30.37 billion) in fiscal 2018-19 that ended on March 31. Of this, 92.66 per cent or 3,081.630 billion yen ($28.14 billion) worth of goods were imported from Asia, according to trade statistics from the ministry of finance.
 
Among the Asian countries, imports from China stood at 1,934.321 billion yen ($17.66 billion), a slight increase of 1.4 per cent year-on-year, the data showed.
 
During the year, Japan imported apparel and accessories worth 178.441 billion yen ($1.63 billion) from the EU, up 9.7 per cent year-on-year. The Far Eastern country also imported 13.333 billion yen (($121.78 million) worth of clothing and accessories from the US, slightly less compared to last fiscal.
 
Meanwhile, the value of Japan’s import of textile yarn and fabrics increased 5.5 per cent year-on-year to 976.917 billion yen ($8.92 billion) during the period under review. A bulk of these imports valued at 866.349 billion yen ($7.91 billion) were supplied by the countries in the Asian region, with China alone accounting for 528.984 billion yen ($4.83 billion), while imports from Asean nations stood at 214.145 billion yen ($1.96 billion).
 
Japan imported yarn and fabric worth 67.095 billion yen ($612.85 million) from the EU countries, whereas its imports from the US were valued at 25.198 billion yen ($230.16 million) last fiscal.  (PC)
