MD5, the security technology accelerator in the US, will host Hacking Emergency Response, a hackathon focused on leveraging new fabric technology to create novel solutions for emergency response. The event will take place at MIT’s Media Lab from July 28-30, and will bring together practitioners, technologists and military staff to build product prototypes.

The prototypes will incorporate functional fabrics as part of systems in challenging environments, such as disaster sites, conflict zones and other scenarios of emergency response.

The hackathon is being organised in partnership with the MIT Innovation Initiative, Advanced Functional Fabrics of America (AFFOA), and the Department of Defense Manufacturing and Industrial Base Policy under Acquisition Technology and Logistics. It will feature mentors from the field to provide unique insights to these entrepreneurs interested in the challenges of communications, data collection and emergency response in various environments.

Technologies to be hacked include advanced fabrics as well as software and hardware tools sourced from a range of AFFOA and MD5 stakeholders. The winning teams will be invited to continue developing their solution concepts with awards of up to $15,000, said the organiser in a press release. (KD)
