The recovery in consumer confidence stalled last year. Consumers were almost as pessimistic at the end of 2024 as they were at the beginning of the year. With a figure of -26, the consumer confidence indicator for December is positioned well below its long-term average for the previous twenty years (-10), said CBS in a press release.
Consumers are more pessimistic about the economy in December than they were in November. This component of the indicator fell to -45, compared to -43 in November. Consumers’ assessment of both the economic situation over the previous twelve months and the economic outlook for the next twelve months has deteriorated. With the balance for the economic situation over the past 12 months dropping to -54 from -51 in November. Similarly, expectations for the economic situation over the next 12 months fell to -37 from -34.
Willingness to buy among consumers stood at -13 in December, down from -12 in November. Sentiment regarding the financial situation over the last 12 months remained unchanged at -11. Expectations for the financial situation in the next 12 months showed a marginal decline, with the balance slipping to 0 from 1 in November. The perception of whether it is a good time to buy consumer durables improved slightly, with the balance moving to -27 from -28 in the previous month, added the release.
