Atlanta based largest home improvement The Home Depot will utilize this year's parade to honor the magic of the Olympic spirit and the company's support of amateur athletes in America. The Home Depot's float entry, "Going for the Gold," which runs in the 117th Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan. 2, 2006, will feature Olympic athletes who will proudly represent the United States in the 2006 Winter Olympic Games.
The athletes compete in sports such as speed skating, bobsled and snowboarding, and are associates of The Home Depot through the company's sponsorship of the Olympic Job Opportunities Program (OJOP). The 2006 Winter Olympic Games will be held Feb. 10-26 in Torino, Italy.
"The Home Depot is committed to supporting the Olympic movement and amateur athletes on their journey to the Olympics," said Tom Taylor, Executive Vice President of Merchandising and Marketing at The Home Depot. "Olympic float allows us to salute the more than 50 Winter Olympic hopefuls that work in stores. Company also hope the float ignites the excitement of the Olympics in the thousands of people watching the parade, both along the route and at home."
Since 1992, The Home Depot has employed more than 500 athlete-associates through OJOP. The ideals that guide the company - perseverance, hard work and a commitment to excellence -- are embodied in The Home Depot's support of the Olympic movement. More than 200 world-class athletes in North America tie on orange aprons and go to work at The Home Depot in exchange for support and steady wages. Since the program started, more than 300 athlete-associates have competed in the Olympic and Paralympic Games winning 171 medals, including 75 gold, 59 silver and 37 bronze.
