Tempe's new logistics facility will begin operations with an initial intake of 300 employees, though this figure will eventually climb to more than 500 employees at full capacity as the hub adjusts to forecast growth at Inditex's retail business. The centre is designed to allow future expansion of its storage and distribution capacity. Separately, environmental sustainability was a significant factor in the complex's design.
The "2011-2015 Sustainable Inditex" strategic environmental plan calls for initiatives aimed at lessening the company's environmental impact across all areas of its business, including logistics. Highlights of these efforts at the logistics business include optimising transport routes, adding a fleet of next-generation vehicles, initiatives for reducing, re-using and recycling packaging materials and training drivers in efficient driving, among other programmes. The design of Tempe's distribution hub includes enhanced energy efficiency lighting systems which enable the site to reduce annual CO2 emissions by 75 tonnes.
