“Martin's arrest is part of an ongoing campaign by maquila owners in the Tehuacan region such as Gil and Kamil Nacif, the 'denim king', to discredit and obstruct the work of the Commission."

“Calidad de Confecciones is a subcontractor for AZT, an apparel company which is partly-owned by the anti-union Kamil Nacif, the 'denim king', who closed his Tarrant Apparel Group factories in 2003 after workers tried to organize an independent union at the Tarrant Ajalpan factory."

The ITGLWF has urged the Governor to secure the immediate release of Martín Barrios Hernández when he appears in court on January 4, to hold an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his arrest, as well as to uphold the rights of the fired maquila workers.
