CMAI recommends amendment of labor laws for garment sector

the clothing manufacturers association of india (cmai) announced, amendments to the existing labour laws in the country.

the organisation has advised to impose execution of annual contracts for employees in the garment industry and restriction over activities of trade unions in the industry.

cmai chairman (southern regional committee) suresh mahajan explained that the garment industry is facing rigid competition from their international counterparts and the industry in order to survive has to introduce changes in the present system of labour laws.

mahajan also recommended a renewable bond system where employees are hired for 12 months—'if there isn't sufficient work is not available after 12 months, their services should be terminated'.

next to other recommendations, the organization suggested definite exit policy for capitalists, who wish to shut down their businesses.

additionally, factory owners must be permitted to extend working hours from to 60 hours per week from currently 48 hours per week to enhance their the production capacity.
