Bhiwandi, with over 4.5 lakh looms, is the largest powerloom cluster, followed by Tamil Nadu which has a concentration of 3.5 lakh looms mostly around Coimbatore. Players in Tamil Nadu have already moved to automated powerlooms that is helping them in increasing their efficiency.
JN Singh, Union Textile Commissioner pointed out that Bhiwandi too is moving in this direction. This is evident through the marked shift from job-work for traders in Mumbai, to manufacturing for export purposes.
In the last six years, the sector has borrowed to the tune of Rs 1,800 crore for modernisation and upgradation of facilities.
