China becomes world leader in warp knitting

After nearly ten years of development, China has become a leader in warp knitting, which can be gauzed by the number of new warp knitting machines purchased by the country.

Warp knitting is a process by which the yarn zigzags along the length of the fabric, i.e., following adjacent columns of knitting, rather than a single row, and is almost always done by machine, not by hand.

German firm Karl Mayer, which is the market leader in warp knitting technology, shifted its market focus to Asia, especially China, in 1990s.

Last year, corporate sales of Karl Mayer (China) Co. Ltd. grew to 1.5 billion yuan, an increase of 50 percent over the same period of the previous year.

The Chinese subsidiary produced a total of 2,000 sets of warp knitting machines, plus another 2,000 sets of warp knitting machines were produced by Karl Mayer at its German headquarters last year.

Karl Mayer sold a majority of the total 4,000 warp knitting machines produced by it to Chinese enterprises in 2011. Thus, China has become the biggest market for Karl Mayer.
