Research and development organization Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) announces that the success and sustainability of the Australian Merino industry is as much about youth as any other factor according to Dr Len Stephens, Chief Executive Officer, Australian Wool Innovation (AWI).
And proof of AWI's – a woolgrower owned company – focus on future leaders is its funding of 20 young Merino breeders from across Australia who will participate in the Australian Association of Stud Merino Breeders' (AASMB) leadership course in February.
"AWI working with major decision makers to get innovative products and technologies such as machine washable suits and sports active wear to market, or supporting future leaders in Australia," Dr Stephens said.
"This leadership course is a great opportunity for AWI and the Australian Association of Stud Merino Breeders to work together to help provide future Australian Merino leaders with the skills to keep this great industry in good hands.
"AWI considers investment in young Merino breeders important to give them the skills to manage their own industry – that's providing the head and the heart for a successful and sustainable industry."
In a five month period AWI will have supported and funded 55 young people – all of whom have been nominated by their respective industry organisations.
Last year AWI held a two day workshop with 35 people, at an average age of 30, from across the wool pipeline – from woolgrower to designer and all in between.
