The first, Masahiro Oono, is textile design project manager of Japanese specialist wool weaver Nikke. The company began creating woollen cloth over 110 years ago and is renowned for its exceptionally fine wool fabrics for the luxury market. Mr Oono says he will be looking for “something unusual, that no one else has thought of - a new way” in this year’s winning work. Our other esteemed judge, James E Sugden OBE, is director of Johnstons of Elgin. Established in 1797, Johnstons of Elgin is synonymous with fine knitted and woven woollens and cashmere, and supplies the world’s leading design houses. Mr Sugden believes that it’s crucial to help young designers find a platform for success. He hopes to find someone with “a focused perspective and a comprehensive knowledge of colour, weave and texture” to champion the Woolmark Texprint Award.
