BASF offers overview of Elastoskin polyurethane system

“The technology is a very cost-competitive option for producing high-quality skins for automotive interiors and other applications, and it makes it easy and practical to create multi-tone, soft-touch interior surfaces with no added material costs and no additional cycle times,” Green said.
“Unlike other soft-skin materials typically formed via slush- or vacuum-formed processes, Elastoskin is an aromatic, isocyanates-based polyurethane elastomer that is applied by either spray or reaction injection molding.”
Green added that because the Elastoskin polyurethane system is a thermoset plastic, automotive skins made from it are resistant to cracking and retain their soft, leather-like feel over a wide temperature range without requiring plasticizers, which are common sources of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that cause fogging in automotive interiors.
