Mr. H Mahadevan, Dy. General Secretary, AITUC who also spoke on the occasion said that trade unions did not oppose FDIs but cautioned that opening up of retail to MNCs would have dangerous consequences. In his view, the retail opening will lead to massive unemployment and erode the basis of those that are already there in the organized and unorganized retailing.
He claimed that most of the arguments cited in favour of retail opening for MNCs and studies conducted again supporting that retail should be opened up were not neatly done as fallacies exist in them. Therefore, he opposed any policy decision that aims at opening up of retail to MNCs.
Mr. Anil K Agarwal, ASSOCHAM President in his welcome address said that opening up of retail would pay off high dividends and enrich the Indian economy and players involved in it.
Mr. Dilip Modi, Chairman, ASSOCHAM Retail Committee strongly spoke for the entry of MNCs in retailing arguing that it will enlarge our exports and create employment opportunities to many Indians.
According to Mr. Sanjeev Duggal, CEO & MD, NIS Sparta Ltd. and Co-Chairman, ASSOCHAM Retail Committee, “the paradigm shift in the retail sector could be seen as the turning point for all stakeholders in the industry, government, and consumer to collaborate and create a professional India providing the best value for its people across all levels and segments”.
