Retail volume up 0.9%

EUROSTAT declares that in January 2006, compared to January 2005, the volume of retail trade1 grew by 0.9 percent in the euro-zone2 and by 1.5 percent in the EU25. Compared to December 20053, the retail sales index rose by 0.8 percent in the euro-zone and fell by 0.1 percent in the EU25.

Annual changes
In January 2006, compared to January 2005, retail trade of “food, drinks and tobacco” dropped by 0.2 percent in the euro-zone, but gained 0.4 percent in the EU25. The non food sector increased by 1.8 percent and by 2.3 percent respectively.

Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade rose in Latvia (+18.6 percent), Estonia (+13.1 percent), Lithuania (+9.9 percent), Sweden (+7.8 percent), Finland (+7.2 percent), Denmark (+6.9 percent), Slovakia (+6.8 percent), Austria (+3.7 percent), Poland (+3.6 percent), Luxembourg (+2.6 percent), Germany (+1.5 percent) and the United Kingdom (+1.0 percent). Falls were recorded in Spain (-0.9 percent) and France (-0.3 percent).

Monthly changes
In January 2006, compared with December 2005, “food, drinks and tobacco” increased by 1.0 percent in the euro-zone, but fell by 0.4 percent in the EU25. The non food sector rose by 0.5 percent in the euro-zone, but fell by 0.1 percent in the EU25.

Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade increased in Germany (+2.7 percent), Austria (+1.8 percent), Denmark and Finland (both +1.6 percent), Slovakia (+1.4 percent), Latvia (+1.0 percent) and France (+0.5 percent), while it remained unchanged in Luxembourg and Sweden. Decreases were recorded in Lithuania (-3.0 percent), the United Kingdom (-1.6 percent), Poland (-1.2 percent), Estonia (-1.1 percent) and Spain (-0.3 percent).
