Technical textiles hold lots of promise

VK Kothari, Textile Technology Head, IIT Delhi, reportes that the technical textile presently accounts for US $4 billion worth of revenue, and will jump up to $7 billion by 2007.

Technical textiles include medical textiles, construction textiles, packaging textiles, industrial textiles, geotextiles, packaging textile, Oeko textiles, agro textiles, clothing textiles (shoe laces) baby diapers, footwear and home textiles such as carpets and upholstery are all areas of growth.

Government has decided to provide infrastructure to build factories and funds at five percent interest rate to be reimbursed under the Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS)to develop and upgrade technology.
