MOFCOM presented the statements of Ambassador Sun Zhenyu on “Issues related to trade in textiles” at the CTG meeting.

“Thank you, Mr Chairman. China appreciates all the energy you have personally put into this issue. We would also like to thank the distinguished delegate of Turkey for the statement and for sharing with us some of the ideas before the meeting.”

“Mr Chairman, this issue has been put on our agenda for rather a long time. Just now, we have been listening carefully to our Turkish colleague and we are glad to have sensed some flexibility. We think this is a positive movement. We hope this kind of constructive and cooperative atmosphere will last for the sake of smooth running of our council meeting.”

“Turning back to the substance, Mr Chairman, our position is well known and it has not changed. As a systemic concern, after the termination of ATC, we are not convinced that the textiles and apparel sector should yet again be treated differently, either in the form of a comprehensive work program or in the form of a study of implications.”

“Mr Chairman, we are sympathetic that some of our developing country partners face adjustment difficulties, because we, too, have been and still are facing the same difficulties. At the last council meeting, my colleague from our mission has already drawn your attention to our formidable adjustment experience which I am not going to repeat.”

“Since it has taken the world half a century to finally bring to an end the unfair trading system in textiles and clothing, we must not go back. The textiles and clothing sector should not be singled out again.”
