Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is taking major steps to assure that the industries follow the safety regulations laid down.

However, it has not achieved much success in these efforts.

BGMEA has been able to close down just three factories till now and thousands are still running under the same poor conditions.

The three plants are Fame Garments of Rasulbagh at Mohakhali, Bari Apparels and Anzir Apparels at Bipile in Savar.

Garment industry is one of the most important and profitable industry accounting for huge share of the country's income.

Nevertheless, the working condition in majority of these factories is unhealthy, unsafe and the framework of the buildings is such that can collapse anytime.

BGMEA is now demanding a separate ministry that will deal with issues of garment and textile industry.

Abdus Salam Morshedi, Acting President, informed that 12 teams were formed to identify the factories that operate in dangerous buildings.

The teams had already begun their work, 10 of which are placed in Dhaka and remaining two in Chittagong.

Morshedi explained that so far 467 workers had lost their lives in different accidents in this sector in the last 20 years.
