Lambing season is ideal time for mulesing

Mulesing contractors will need NMAP accreditation by 31 December 2006 to be allowed to mules after that date. Wool growers who mules their own sheep have until the end of 2008 before they must be accredited to that level.

Dr Scott Williams, AWI Animal Health and Welfare Program Manager, said the process involved both a knowledge assessment and a 'hands-on' skills assessment.

“Level one accreditation requires a demonstrated knowledge of mulesing requirements and how to mules, so it can be done any time,” Dr Williams said.

“However, levels two and three involve demonstrated practical skills for correct mulesing, and for that you need to have your skills assessed. Assessment days can only be arranged when lambs are available so it's important for as many contractors as possible to take advantage of the opportunity to be assessed this lambing season.”

One-day training and assessment courses are currently available through the Kondinin Group and the Livestock Contractors Association (LCA) to enable contractors to be accredited in 2006.

Training and assessment days will be run across the country starting in May. Details are available on 1800 200 798.

“A comprehensive package explaining the mulesing requirements for wool producers is being produced, including the assessment materials necessary to gain level one accreditation,” Dr Williams said.

“I'd encourage producers who want to continue mulesing their own sheep to reach at least this level over the next 12-18 months, so that by the end of 2008 they are ready for the practical skills assessment needed for level two and three.”

Levels of Accreditation
Level one: demonstrated knowledge of mulesing requirements and how to mules.

Levels two & three: demonstrated practical skills for correct mulesing. A person with level two accreditation has the requisite skills but is judged as requiring more practice in a field setting before accreditation to level three. A person with level two accreditation requires reassessment within 12 months of the original assessment to remain accredited.
