Handloom sector is blooming after witnessing 5 autumns as the sector registered more than 10 percent increase in this year.
Though with tumbling profits, lack of modernization and decline in demand, handloom has faced severe competition from powerloom segment, it has left behind its hard times with production rise.
Ministry of Textiles believes that handloom is the export-oriented segment and hence, it has been given allocations of Rs241 crore in the budget this year.
To modernize the sector, expansion of Integrated Handloom Cluster Development Scheme is on the top of list.
Earlier the scheme was to include 20 handloom clusters at the cost of Rs40 crore, but now 100 mini clusters are planned to set up with the financial help of Rs50 crore, informed officials of Textile Ministry.
Further, to cope with marketing problems of handloom products, the number of handloom expos will be increased from 185 to 350 in the current year and 400 by next year.
