Central Silk Board (CSB) is looking to develop eri silk rearing in Gujarat.
Gujarat is leader in castor production accounting for 60 percent of country's castor cultivation.
Board has initiated to promote eri silk nurturing in non-traditional areas.
Rearing and spinning of sericulture, the second largest variety of silk produced in the country, are restricted to parts of north-east.
Board also promote silk in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala where castor and tapioca cultivation is very good.
India is world's second largest producer of silk; its eri silk production is close to 1,800 tons and mulberry accounts for 13,000 tons.
Board also expects four spinning mills in Gujarat, Assam and Andhra Pradesh.
The expected production in each mill is as much as 50 kg of eri silk yarn per shift.
It is estimated that 1.5 kg of eri silkworm shells can produce one kg of eri silk yarn.
Eri silk output accounts for over 80 percent of the non-mulberry production in the country.
