After the elimination of textile quotas, exports to the US climbed significantly.

A Sakthivel, President, Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA), inaugurating the 22nd India Knit Fair Spring/Summer Collection 2007 at Pazhamkarai Village in Tirupur, announced: "There was a deflection of trade from China to India in the apparel sector. This has resulted in a higher growth of India's exports compared to that of China."

He also said, "Along with the export led growth, it becomes necessary for the producers to showcase their products and the technology involved in producing them."

Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) collaborated with TEA, India Knit Fair Association (IKFA) and the Union ministry of textiles to organize this Knit exhibition, that will last from May 10 to 12 2006, especially targeting the customers from countries like Germany, Austria and Switzerland among those from the US and the UK.

Tirupur in Tamil Nadu has emerged as the leading manufacturer and exporter of knitwear in India.

Total knitwear exports from this town by the end of March 2006 were pegged at Rs8000 crore of which 34 percent was consumed by the US markets.

India Knit Fair is one of the most reputed knitwear trade fairs in the world that highlights latest trends, techniques and tapestry, focusing on soft, comfy, snuggy baby wear this year.
