Bikinis made from Australian merino wool do not cause itching and could well offer new opportunities for the industry.
Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) says work has been going on a project with an Australian fashion designer who wove lycra with wool to create a unique fabric for swimwear.
International and national buyers have evinced interest in woollen bikinis, says Wool spokeswoman Melissa Grace.
"We've been working on this project with Australian designer Josephine Nathan," she said.
The fabric has got a beautiful stretch to it and softness from merino wool. It is suitable to be worn in water.
Grace informed that bikinis created quite an impression during its debut at Australian Fashion Week.
Acceptance of wool bikini will open up market for Australian merino wool, an area that wasn't discovered earlier.
First established as a subsidiary of Australian Wool Services in 2001, Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) became a fully independent public company limited by shares and owned by Australian woolgrowers in 2002.
Our mission is to drive research, development and innovation that will increase the long-term profitability of Australian woolgrowers.
AWI initiates, commissions and delivers research and development (R&D) to Australian woolgrowers. We work through alliances and contracts and, wherepossible, we commercialise R&D outcomes. Our primary aim is the adoption of technology - on farm and along the global wool pipeline.
We also provide trade development and market intelligence services on behalf of Australian woolgrowers. Our role is to provide government with economic and social data to support Australian representations to other nations.
