Bt Cotton's shadow over farmer suicides in rain-fed areas

The new study has sparked concern in India. Former environment and rural development Minister and Rajya Sabha member Jairam Ramesh told a leading newspaper that India which is the second largest country in the world cultivating Bt cotton, cannot afford to ignore the findings of this new study.

Agricultural expert MS Swaminathan said the merits of Bt cotton adoption remain debatable as some have approved it for giving better yield, while some question the claim. He said his advice in 2004 to companies selling hybrid seeds to sell insurance schemes alongside, is still to be adopted widely. (SH)
